When Old Insulation Removal Comes First
Old insulation removal is the first step when what is in the attic or crawl space is hurting more than helping. Ice dams and roof leaks soak insulation, and wet insulation loses most of its R-value and holds moisture against the ceiling. Mice and squirrels nest in it and soil it. Decades of foot traffic and storage pack it down to a few inches. Covering any of that with new insulation hides the problem.
How removal works
A high-power vacuum pulls loose fill through a hose into bags outside, so it does not travel through the house. Batts are bagged by hand. Old foam can be cut or scraped off if it must come out.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite, a pebbly gray-brown fill found in some older homes, can contain asbestos. We do not disturb it; it should be tested and, if needed, removed by an abatement contractor before other work.
Fix the cause
If the insulation got wet from a roof leak or ice dam, the roof and attic bypasses need fixing too, or the new insulation will get wet again. We point those out on the quote.
Then reinsulate
With the attic clean we seal every bypass and blow new insulation to the R-value you choose.

Old Insulation Removal Questions
Can new insulation go over wet insulation?
No. Wet insulation should come out and the leak should be fixed first.
How do I know if I have vermiculite?
It looks like small, shiny gray-brown pebbles. Do not disturb it; have it tested.
How long does removal take?
Most attics are cleared in a day.
Do you clean up rodent contamination?
We remove soiled insulation. For active infestations, have the animals handled first.
