When Blown-In Cellulose & Fiberglass Is the Right Call

Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass are the most economical way to reach R-49 or R-60 over an open attic floor, and the main way to insulate walls that are already closed. Many older Saginaw and Bay City houses have walls with little or no insulation and attics with a few inches of old fill. Blowing loose fill, after sealing, fixes both.

Cellulose

Made mostly from recycled paper treated for fire resistance. It packs densely, slows air movement better than loose fiberglass and is the usual choice for dense-pack walls. Fixr lists it at $1.75 to $3.80 per square foot.

Fiberglass

Lighter and less likely to settle, with Fixr listing $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot. Common in attics of newer homes.

Dense-pack walls

We drill small holes, from inside or outside depending on the finish, and pack cellulose into each wall bay. Balloon-framed houses need the tops and bottoms of the cavities blocked so the fill does not disappear into the floor system.

Seal first

Loose fill does not stop air. We seal attic bypasses with foam and sealant before blowing, and install baffles so the soffit vents stay open.

Blown-In Cellulose & Fiberglass Questions

How deep is R-60?

With loose fill it usually means well over a foot and a half, depending on the material. The quote lists depth and R-value.

Will cellulose settle?

Loose cellulose settles some, which is why we blow to a settled depth. Dense-packed walls are packed tight to limit settling.

Can you insulate walls from outside?

Yes, by removing a course of siding or drilling and plugging, depending on the siding.

Is there a rebate for wall insulation?

Consumers Energy's chart lists $125 for at least 500 square feet of above-grade wall for gas or combined customers. Check the current chart.
